Stop 4. Hayward Wright’s Pecan Trees

121 Avondale Road, Rosebank

These two eighty year old pecan trees seen from Hayward Wright Lane are protected trees and evidence of Hayward Wright’s legacy as an important internationally renowned horticulturist on the Rosebank peninsula. A ‘nurseryman’ with a garden area stretching almost from the Whau River to Rosebank Road. Hayward Wright is known for developing the kiwifruit cultivar that forms the basis of the kiwifruit industry today. A few remaining trees are still scattered in our neighbourhood.

Before being sold and subdivided in 2017 for housing, a large part of Hayward Wright’s original garden and sheds were previously owned by the environmentalist and peace activist Kurt Brehmer who campaigned for the first cycleway in Auckland and the Avondale Peace Garden (located at the entrance to Avondale where Great North Road meets Ash Street).
